上世紀(jì)八十年代末，我國最早的一批獨(dú)苗正好進(jìn)入了跨小學(xué)、初中的學(xué)生階段。某縣城里雙職工家庭的陳小進(jìn)便是這樣一個(gè)獨(dú)生子。
陳小進(jìn)的暑假剛開始，爺爺奶奶便去了外地的伯父家，常玩在一起的鄰居衛(wèi)東則去了外地的父親那里。每個(gè)白天，當(dāng)陳小進(jìn)的父母去了廠里上班，家里便剩下陳小進(jìn)一個(gè)人。日復(fù)一日的漫長白天，作為獨(dú)苗的陳小進(jìn)忍受著孤獨(dú)不斷的滋長。
他用了很多辦法來打發(fā)時(shí)間，尤其是下午，他看書、打棋譜，甚至百無聊賴地玩螞蟻、知了等昆蟲。一天好不容易過完，到了傍晚，陳小進(jìn)都會(huì)撕掉當(dāng)天的日歷。對(duì)于很多孩子非常期待的暑假，在陳小進(jìn)這里卻是難熬的，他渴望著日歷盡快翻到開學(xué)，盡快把這漫漫暑期過完。
